How do I make a backup? How can I move it from one computer to the other? Simply copy it from the -dir to another -dir on another computer?
How do all that without destroying the wallet.dat file.
Well you only need to back up your Wallet.dat file. as long as you have that you are good to go. If you move the client to a new computer the first thing to do would be to make a copy of your Wallet.dat file (in your Roaming directory in Windows). I usually just put mine on a thumb drive.
Then re-download the QT file and start it up. Once it restarts close it and go to your Roaming folder, find the directory and delete the new wallet.dat file and replace it with the one you saved on your thumb drive.
You should also copy your .conf file over from the old computer to the new one as well or you can make a new one if you prefer.
Then, restart the QT and let the blockchain download and your transactions and everything will show up in your new client.
You can also make a copy of the whole directory in your Roaming folder and port it over to the new computer as well, just stick it in the Roaming directory and you are good to go, and you won't have to re-download the whole blockchain.
Hope this helps!
