There is a lot of talk about Scrypt Asics. A lot talk and no evidence as far as I can see, BUT a company called Scrypt Asic International claims to be releasing its first batch of SCRYPT ASIC Chips capable of 25MHs to its initial investors in mid December. Until a few days ago, I took their claims with a pinch of salt, but then looking at the top hash rates on the smalltimeminer and seeing anonymous users with hashrates of around 25, 50, 75 and 100 MH/s I can't help wondering if somebody is testing them out on our pool.
Right now, top hashrate on smalltimeminer is nicolas8426 at 100,244 kh/s . Has he _really_ got about 100 - 150 GPUs going flat out right now on smalltimeminer? If he has, then, WOW. Hats off to you sir.
I only mention it because
Other companies claim to be taking pre-orders for SCRYPT ASICS that will arrive 4/5 months down the line. If SCRYPT ASICS really are getting into the networks NOW, the network difficulty will have risen exponentially 4-5 months down the line, so whatever assumptions you make to justify your 'investment' could be way over-estimated.
2. Beware of what assumptions you make regarding return on investment for GPUs if scrypt asics really are coming online right now.
3. What precautions can we take against 51% attacks given that a scrypt ASIC claims to be 10 to 20 times faster than a rig with 3 7950s.
4. Scrypt ASIC intl claim to be releasing the second batch of 250 asics in February. It looks like they will effectively auction them off to the highest bidders as they will release lists of buyers several times between now and then, no doubt with the expectation that the people who get bumped off the bottom will up their investment each round. All this, of course, is assuming they are real.
Whatever you do, please, please be extremely careful what you do with your money and what assumptions you make regarding return on investment for purchasing hardware. I really don't know if a scrypt asic is real or just an elaborate scam. If it is real the arrival of scrypt ASIC will change the economics and difficulty for the average gpu user of mining scrypt based coins. If its a scam, then you have nothing to worry about, unless you just bought some empty promises
